What is narcolepsy?
Narcolepsy is a rare, often hereditary, chronic disorder that causes bouts of sleepiness. People with this disorder can suddenly be overwhelmed by severe sleepiness, causing them to abruptly fall asleep during the day. This can be a major inconvenience in your day-to-day life or in your job. This disease can also manifest itself through sudden bouts of muscle weakness accompanied by full mental awareness, which is also known as cataplexy.
Narcolepsy is a condition caused by deficiency of a hormone called ‘Hypocretin’ in the brain. In many cases, patients with narcolepsy have a family member with an immune disorder, from whom they inherited the disease.
If you are diagnosed with narcolepsy, Haaglanden Clinics will refer you to the sleep centre of HMC for further treatment.
