Aftercare following oro-antral communication
Patient Information Leaflet
What is an oro-antral communication?
Sometimes, during a treatment in the upper jaw, a connection may form between the oral cavity and the nasal sinus. This opening can allow saliva to enter the nasal sinus, leading to a possible sinus infection caused by oral bacteria. To prevent this, a test is conducted to check for any potential connection, and if present, it is immediately closed. It takes approximately two weeks for the opening to heal.
What can I expect after the procedure?
In the first few days following the procedure, there may be some blood coming from your nose. This is normal and will stop on its own. During the first two weeks, avoid significant pressure differences between your mouth and nose. This means:
- Do not blow your nose; only wipe it. You may sniff your nose instead.
- If you need to sneeze, keep your mouth wide open.
- Refrain from playing wind instruments.
For the first few days, we recommend consuming softer foods that require less chewing. Additionally, it is advised not to smoke during the healing process, as it can impede wound healing. Furthermore, avoid direct sunlight or using tanning beds, as this may cause additional swelling.
Stiches:
Any stitches will dissolve on their own within one to three weeks, unless the surgeon indicates otherwise.
Contact Haaglanden Clinics when you experience:
- A fever above 39 degrees Celsius.
- Severe bleeding.
- An increase in swelling and difficulty swallowing 3-5 days after your treatment.
- If you suspect a new oro-antral communication
