Hypersomnia can occur in different degrees, ranging from mild sleepiness (e.g. only after lunch) to severe, with the patient repeatedly falling asleep in unusual circumstances (e.g. during a meal, in conversation, or during a short drive).
Episodes of hypersomnia are mainly triggered in low-activity circumstances, such as during sedentary work, while reading or watching TV, in a meeting or while driving.
While fighting their sleepiness, patients may exhibit some form of ‘automatic behaviour’, meaning that they will do things that they will not be able to remember afterwards.
Diagnosis and treatment of hypersomnia takes place in HMC’s sleep centre.
