Mandibular Repositioning Device (MRD)
A possible treatment for sleep apnea is wearing a MRD, a Mandibular Repositioning Device. A MRD is an orthodontic device that you wear at night and that pulls the lower jaw forward, opening the trachea. This reduces/eliminates apneas and prevents snoring. For this treatment, we will schedule an appointment with one of our oral surgeons who will make a dental impression that will serve as a template for your orthodontics. At Haaglanden Clinics, we use SomnoMed’s Somnodent orthodontics.
To check whether your MRD is working as intended, you will be scheduled for another sleep study, this time wearing the MRD. This test is important, because we want to be certain that wearing the MRD actually lowers your apnea index. If necessary, the device can be adjusted for optimal results.
If you have OSAS, the costs of a MRD will be covered in full by your health insurer.
Please note that Haaglanden Clinics can only help fit you with a MRD if our own sleeping team has established that you need one.
