Antrum perforation Information folder

Sometimes during a treatment in the upper jaw a connection is created between the oral cavity and the nasal sinus. Saliva can enter the nasal sinus through this opening, after which the mouth bacteria can cause a sinus infection. To prevent this a test is carried out to see whether a possible connection has been established. If so it is closed immediately. it takes about two weeks for the “hole” to heal.

What can I expect after the treatment?
the first few days after the procedure, some blood may come out of your nose. this is normal and stops on its own. The first two weeks you should avoid large differences in air pressure between mouth and nose. that is to say:
• Do not blow your nose, but only wipe. however, you may pull up your nose.
• If you need to sneeze, keep your mouth wide open.
• Do not play a wind instrument. The first few days we advise you to use softer food. You don’t have to chew much. It is also advised not to smoke for the first few days, which is bad for the healing of the wound. In addition it is advised not to sit in direct sunlight or go under the tanning bed, this can cause extra swelling.

Sutures:
The stitches resolve on their own within one to three weeks, unless otherwise stated by the oral surgeon.

Sun:
We advise you not to go with your head in the sun for the first few days in warm weather!
