Soon you will be coming to Haaglanden Clinics for the removal of cosmetically bothersome spots/moles. In this brochure, we provide you with information about the treatment and advice for postoperative care for a prompt recovery at home. Your cooperation is necessary to ensure the success of this treatment.

What does the treatment involve?
In most cases, moles are removed for cosmetic reasons. It is also possible to remove other cosmetically bothersome spots on the face or body.

In summary
You come to the clinic for the removal of cosmetically bothersome moles or other spots on the skin.

The treatment is outpatient; you will not be admitted to the clinic.
If you use blood thinners, please inform us.
You will receive local anesthesia.
The treatment takes about 15 minutes, depending on the number of spots, the duration of the treatment may be longer.
You can drive home by yourself after the procedure.
If you experience postoperative pain, you can take paracetamol
. Once you are back home, follow the advice in this brochure. If there are issues after the treatment, please call Haaglanden Clinics.

Procedure
The procedure takes place in one of our treatment rooms. You can eat and drink normally beforehand. The procedure is done under local anesthesia, meaning only the skin around the mole is numbed. The plastic surgeon will make an incision around the mole, allowing it to be removed. The wound will be closed with stitches.

After the treatment

After the treatment, you will go back home.
You will be scheduled for a follow-up appointment at Haaglanden Clinics. This will be approximately 1 to 2 weeks after the treatment, during the follow-up appointment, the stitches will be removed.
The anesthesia wears off after about 2 hours. You may experience some postoperative pain. If necessary, you can take paracetamol, a maximum of 4 x 2 tablets of 500 mg per day.
After the treatment, the skin around the wound may be red and swollen.
Sunlight can affect the scar’s healing process; it is advisable to use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher in the sun, as well as under the sunbed. We recommend not going directly into the full sun after the procedure and avoiding direct sunlight.
Do not consume alcohol within 24 hours after the procedure, as alcohol thins the blood.
We advise against smoking, as smoking slows down the healing process.

Risks and complications

Complications with this surgery are fortunately very rare but not excluded.
Bleeding may occur at the wound site due to the procedure.
An infection may occur at the wound site due to the procedure.
The wound may heal poorly, causing it to open or the scar to become more visible.
Scars will naturally become less visible but never completely disappear.
